Top tips for New Students!

Some of the Library Liaison Team were asked what advice they would give to a new student coming to Royal Holloway.

It’s not always Library related, but it is funny and definitely helpful!

We are looking forward to welcoming new & returning students to the Library, make sure you attend your Library Inductions in your departments to get the most out of the Library straight away.

Your laptop has a virus and is feeling far from ship-shape. Where would you take it to get fixed?

How to access ESDS

You will need to register with the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) before you can access the resource. Registration is free. To register follow the steps below:

1. Follow the direct link above to ESDS

2. Click Login (top right of the screen)

3. Select “Login via UK Federation”.

4. Type Royal Holloway into the search box and click “continue”.

5. You will be taken to an Athens login authentication point. Do not use the Athens login box, but instead click on “Alternative login”, to the bottom left of the box.

6. In the quick search box type in Royal Holloway, click on “Go” and Royal Holloway should appear at the top of the list.

7. Click on this link, which will take you to a page which allows you to “Go to the Royal Holloway, University of London login page”.

8. You should first tick the “Remember this organisation on your computer” box, then follow the “Go to the Royal Holloway, University of London login page” link.

9. Enter your College username and password, click on “Login” and you will be taken to ESDS, where you can register for an account

10. New users will be offered a Registration Form to complete.

11. Read through the terms and conditions of ESDS, and click the button to indicate that you accept them.

12. Once you have accepted the terms of ESDS you will be sent an e-mail asking you to confirm your intention to register. Click on the link in the e-mail and your registration will be complete. You will now be able to use ESDS services.

 

Library Loves … Postgraduates!

Calling all RHUL postgraduates: the Library Loves … YOU!

Let us explain: each month Library Services will be offering focussed support on a range of different themes under the banner  “Library Loves … “. The theme for July is research support for the RHUL postgraduate community. All taught and research post graduates are welcome to come along to the weekly drop in sessions in:

Room 2.03, Bedford Library, every Thursday in July from 14.00 to 16.00, starting this Thursday, 11th July.

Information Consultants will be on hand to offer help and advice on a range of issues:

  • searching for material for your research topics
  • reference management & creating bibliographies – using RefWorks or EndNote
  • using subject specific resources
  • obtaining material not held at RHUL (inter library loans and using other libraries)
  • help with using social media services in your research

or any other questions you might have regarding library services, no matter how basic or complex!

So, please do come along and feel free to contact the Information Consultant for your subject area / Department (this will link to the list of subject specialists) beforehand and we will be able to have some material ready for you, or just drop in if you happen to be in the area!

If you cannot make any of the drop in session, you can always arrange a one to one appointment with the Information Consultant for your subject area / Department

Library Search – Exporting to Refworks

You will need a Refworks account to export. Details of how to set one up are available here.

If you are going to access Refworks off campus you will need the Group Code: RWRoyalH

  1. When you are in an item there is a Send To link on the right hand side.
  2. This drops down and you can see Refworks as an option.Screen Shot 2013-06-19 at 5.23.17 pm
  3. Click Refworks
  4. You will need to log into Refworks if you aren’t already logged in
  5. The reference automatically imports and this screen appears Screen Shot 2013-06-19 at 5.27.18 pm
  6. To view the reference quickly you can select View Last Imported Folder

Searching for Eresources in Library Search

One of the improvements to Library Search is that you can now search for an Eresource within it. For example if you want to go direct to JSTOR you can just search for JSTOR and get a link to the resource.

You can also search for groups of Eresources in a subject area by selecting E-resource collections  under Resource Type (you may need to select More Options as this video shows)
